Instagram Changes Course After Public Backlash

Instagram, the popular mobile photo-sharing service now owned by Facebook, said Tuesday that it will remove language from its new terms of service suggesting that users' photos could appear in advertisements. The language in question had appeared in updated policies announced Monday and scheduled to take effect Jan. 16. After an outcry on social media and privacy rights blogs, the company clarified that it has no plans to put users' photos in ads.

Facebook's Access to Instagram Data Could Uncrack Images for Ad Targeting

Instagram announced pending updates to its privacy policy yesterday. The headlining change is that the photo-sharing service will now share user data with its new parent, Facebook. That means that advertisers should soon be able to take advantage of Instagram's data to target ads on the social network. While an Instagram spokesperson said the company has "no current plans to share" how its data could be integrated into Facebook's ad targeting options, the possibilities are fairly obvious. At the most basic level, Instagram will feed Facebook data like users’ locations (when shared) and device information.

Instagram Stops Allowing Users to Embed Photos in Tweets

Instagram is no longer allowing Twitter users to view its photographs in tweets in an effort to drive more people to its own website and away from the rival social media company. Kevin Systrom, the CEO of the photo-sharing service that was snapped up by Facebook earlier this year, announced that Instagram has turned off support for "Twitter cards," signaling a deepening rift between two of the web's biggest brands. Twitter users started to complain earlier this week in public messages that Instagram photos weren't displaying properly on Twitter's website.
