Email might not be as shiny as social media and other emerging marketing channels, but it's still arguably the most powerful tool around. A recent study asked consumers which channel they prefer for receiving permission-based promotional messages. A whopping 77 percent said email. No other channel even scored in double digits; only 4 percent of respondents said Facebook, with Twitter and mobile apps both scoring a mere 1 percent. That's a very clear message about how your leads and contacts want to hear from you.

As the report enters its fifth iteration, competition for social network membership is a worldwide battle. Facebook continues to dominate much of the world, but in the Ukraine and Russia we see the rise of Vkontakte and in China we see Kaixin001 appealing to many men. Newer networks like Pinterest and Google+ keep the space in turmoil in the United States.
