During November and December 2009, consumers spent $29.1 billion online — a 4 percent increase over the same period a year earlier, according to a recent report by online marketing research firm comScore.
Dec. 15 ranked as the heaviest online spending day of the year — and of all time — at $913 million, one of nine individual spending days to surpass $800 million during the 2009 holiday season, the report said.
The heavy spending on this day represented a surprise on the heels of a lower than expected $854 million spent on Dec. 14, 2009, also known as Green Monday — a term coined by eBay to describe the Monday at least 10 days prior to Christmas that tends to be the heaviest online spending day of the season.
Meanwhile, Cyber Monday — Nov. 30 — was the second heaviest spending day of the season, with $887 million spent, according to comScore. The third heaviest spending day of the year was Dec. 1 with $886 million in spending, followed by Dec. 16 with $874 million and then Green Monday.
