'News,' 'Party' Most Popular Words Used in E-mail Subject Lines

The two most popular terms used in subject lines are "news" and "party," according to the June 2009 Email Marketing Metrics Report from MailerMailer, an on-demand e-mail list management provider.

Rounding out the 10 most popular terms in subject lines are, according to the report:

  • newsletter;
  • free;
  • night;
  • sale;
  • .com;
  • update;
  • holiday; and
  • week.

The ninth biannual report includes performance data from more than 300 million e-mails in 21 different industries between July 2008 and December 2008.

Other findings from the report include the following:

  • 32.6 percent of all e-mail opens occurred within the first two hours, compared to 29.6 percent six months prior;
  • click rates held steady, rising by 0.08 percent in the second half of 2008;
  • more e-mails are reaching recipients' inboxes; and
  • religious/spiritual e-mails have the highest open and click rates compared to other industries.
